Election of the 1998-1999 Executive Board

At our recent elections, we ushered in next year's Board. The new HASO President is Kelly Vlahakis. Maria Avdalas is our new Vice President of External Affairs, and Helena Findikaki will be our Vice President of Internal Affairs for the second year in a row. Also re-elected to office was Andrea Rosso as Treasurer. Our new Secretary is Eleni Hioureas, and the new Social Chairperson is Marilena Karpodinis. Congratulations and good luck to our new Board of Executive Officers.

Professor-Student Social

On May 26, we had the our annual Professor-Student Social, and as in years before, it proved to be a smashing success. Held in the new Young Salon in Kerckhoff Hall, Greek students and Greek professors came together to interact and just mingle. The new Greek dance group, the Arkoudakia, made their debut to the delight of the crowd. At the Social we awarded our 2nd Annual Spirit of Pericles Award to Professor Sarah Morris, for her contributions to the Greek community and her work towards establishing a Hellenic Studies program at UCLA.

For 3 days straight, HASO was the hit of WorldFest, UCLA's international cultural celebration, when we sold gyros. Some may say that it's a bit cliche, but everyone loves 'em. An overwhelming success, the gyro booth was busy with customers from the moment it open to when it closed and we had to turn people away. This goes to show that you can not have WorldFest without the Greeks.

First General Meeing of the Spring

On Wednesday, April 8, HASO held it's first general meeting of the Spring Quarter. Discussed were, the progress of the development of a Modern Greek Language and Culture Department at UCLA, the upcoming Professor-Student Dialogue, WorldFest, as well as other events for the Spring.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding plays Los Angeles

Nia Vardalos wrote and stars in the one-woman production, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Members of HASO went to the show and we saw one of the best shows we've ever seen. By far, the funniest thing on stage, we were in hysterics from beginning to end. You just have to see this amazing performance. My Big Fat Greek Wedding played at The Globe Theatre in West Hollywood. My Big Fat Greek Wedding ran until April 11.
