SPRING '99

Last General Meeting/Elections

On Wednesday, June 2, HASO held its final general meeting of the year as well as elections for 1999-2000 Board of Executive Officers. At the meeting, Marilena Karpodinis was elected as HASO's new President. Congratulations to her and the rest of the new Executive Board.

Reading by Steve Rangoussis

HASO sponsored a reading by Steve Rangoussis. Mr. Rangoussis' featured work is entitled "Blood and the Imperial Purple" and depicts the adventures and obstacles that Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great faced as he ascended toward supreme power. Cyprus Exhibit

On Tuesday, May 11, HASO held the opening night celebration for the new Cyprus Exhibit. The Exhibit is a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Turkish Invasion and Occupation of Cyprus. The opening night events featured a brief presentation by the Honorary Consul-General of Cyprus.

Smyrna Exhibit

Back by popular demand, The Smyrna Exhibit made its return to Los Angeles during the week of May 3. It is a powerful exhibit that depicts the atrocities committed against the Greek population in Smyrna in 1922.

Reading by Nicholas Papandreou

HASO co-sponsored an event with the Department of Classics. It was a reading by Nicholas Papandreou. Mr. Papandreou is a nominee for the Los Angeles Times Book Award with his work entitled "A Crowded Heart."

Women in Purple: Empresses of Byzantium

On Wednesday, April 7, HASO co-sponsored an event with the Department of History, the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and the Center for Women's Studies. It was a lecture featuring Professor Judith Herrin from King's College in London. The event was entitled, "Women in Purple: Empresses of Byzantium." Professor Herrin is the author of The Formation of Christendom (Princeton University Press, 1987) and numerous articles on Byzantine Culture, religion, and history.



WINTER '99

Hellenic-American Council Annual Honors Dinner Dance

On Saturday, March 6, the Hellenic-American Council hosted its Annual Honors Dinner Dance. This year, HAC honored California State Treasurer Phil Angelides, U.S. Congressman Ed Royce, Mrs. Akrivoe Emmanoulides, Dr. Sarah Morris, and Mr. Petros Papadakis.

5th Annual Professor/Student Social

On Thursday, March 11, HASO hosted the Annual Professor/Student Social, the cornerstone of HASO's event calendar. The Social also featured a sneak preview of the Smyrna Exhibit, which will make its return to Los Angeles in the Spring.



FALL '98

Athens-by-Night

On Friday, November 13, HASO hit up the swanky new club, Athens-by-Night. Aside from the stiff prices for the stiff drinks, everyone had a good time, as even the Hellenic Club from USC recieved word and joined us for the fun.

Oxi Day Celebration

The Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of Southern California (which HASO is a part of) hosted the Annual "Oxi" Day Celebration. The dinner dance was on Sunday, October 24 at St. Sophia in Los Angeles. At this event, we were introduced the new Ambassador of Greece to the U.S., the Honorable Alexander Philon, and the new Consul-General of Greece in Los Angeles, the Honorable George Avgoustis.

First Meeting of the 98-99 School Year

The very first meeting of an action-packed year was held on Wednesday, October 14. We had a basic rundown of what was going on, and gave everyone a chance to meet a lot of new people. The next meeting, will upon us soon, so stay tuned.

Greek Night @ St. Sophia

Greek Night returned on October 9th. The wild party action that is Greek Night was sponsored by the Young Adult League of St. Sophia's. The cover charge was $10 OR in you bring in 3 canned goods, you get in for $5. Food donations and a portion of the proceeds went to benefit Project Mexico.
